My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Mercure Le Sphinx hotel over Christmas. Since it was the holidays, we treated ourselves to the more expensive Pyramid View room. This meant that for a couple hours each day when it wasn't really hazy we could see a corner of one pyramid from our balcony... the view really wasn't worth the upgrade since the best pyramid view is actually from the hotel bar and rooftop restaurant (which was closed the whole time we were there - even on Xmas!).
Anyway, the hotel was alright but definitely not 5 star. The hallways have stained carpets, the hotel lobby stinks like cigarette smoke and, though it looks clean from afar, our room needed some work - there were some stains, hairs from previous guests, etc.
The staff were really nice and they brought us chocolates and cookies on Christmas Eve. It was definitely a memorable place to spend Christmas and with the problems in Egypt over the last year the rooms are a great deal (I think we paid about $120 USD per night for the Pyramic View Room), but if you're expecting 5-star luxury you're going to be disappointed.
